Going Green After Tree Removal

This week it is time to consider unthinkable option number three with regards to the federal budget. Previously we have discussed unthinkable option number one, do nothing and keep spending more than we bring in, and unthinkable option number two, raise taxes to make up the differences between revenues and expenditures.

I was curious what happened to all of this and did some checking around. It turned out that our county has a Community Reclamation Center. It is a place where people can drop off their recyclables. And it is a ways away from the landfill (thank God, lol). But further back in the reclamation center, there are a couple of free garden goodies.

And they also had a gigantic pile of wood chippings (all the branches that are chipped and collected and hauled away). The pile when I first visited was about 20 feet high, and about 40 feet wide!! Just huge. And the wood was chipped into much smaller pieces then I imagined. So I bagged up a lot of that too.

Fallen autumn leaves are a free, abundant material you can mulch your garden with. They have a tendency to mat down so find a way to shred or break them apart. You can use a wood chipper for sale or shredder. If you don’t have access to one of those, you can spread them on the ground in a 2 to 3 inch layer and mow over them with your lawn mower. Another way to break them up is to put them into a hard plastic bucket or trash can and go after them with your weed wacker. Spread shredded autumn leaves 2 to 3 inches thick.

Wood shredders are a much more convenient option than rakes and bags but you have to ask yourself if you want to purchase one or just rent. Some jobs can be too much to handle in one day or even a weekend and after you rent one you might find that you’d like to have one at your disposal or that it’s not worth having. So, maybe renting one is the best way to make an informed decision before you purchase.

Throughout the summer, your biggest task will be to cut the grass and maintain the garden beds. Remember that during very hot and dry periods, it is best to raise your lawn mower blades to keep the grass a bit longer. You’ll find that the longer the grass, the less chance of burning it has.

The temperature of the pellet is very high when it comes out from the pellet mill. In large pellet mill plant, there would be an auxiliary machine named cooler to cool down the hot pellets. But for home maker, you can also utilize a fan to decrease the temperature. Once the pellets are cooled down, there should be a packing machine for storing the wood pellets. If you don’t have packing machine, you should just remember to pack them into the bag or silo to stop them from absorbing the moisture in the air and degrade its burning quality.
